A moment to reflect…

…on the first term observations.

Thanks to everyone for welcoming us into your classes during the first set of observations.  It was wonderful to get to know the students of your classes a little better and to see you all in action.  We pooled together our feedback from the observations and came up with some questions for us all to think about:

  • How do your learners remember things from one lesson to the next?  Or from one unit to the next?
  • Think about one group.  How can one learner’s attendance affect the class dynamic?
  • How can fast finishers’ time be used effectively?
  • Think about one group in which you use a points system.  How would you rate it?  How could you make it more visible, useful or responsive?
  • What function does your board have?  How could you use it more effectively?
  • What’s your standard “teaching stance”?  How does your position affect the class?  How could you use your personal resources (voice, gestures, position) more effectively?
  • How do your energy levels affect your class?
  • How much L1 is their in your class?  Who’s using it and why?
  • In which areas could you train your learners to do what you do (error correction, games, classroom procedures)?
  • Do your activities give learners a natural reason to communicate?
  • How natural is the English you use?
  • What happens to emergent language in your class?
  • With low-level learners, how much support do you give them for freer speaking activities?
  • What reason / motivation do learners have to listen to each other?
  • What do you think are the pros and cons of having a visible class menu?
